Crooked Teeth: Orthodontics and Other Options
The difference between moving teeth and changing their appearance, with limits of aligners, braces and cosmetic restorations.
In this article 08
Orthodontics is considered when teeth need repositioning. Bonding or veneers may disguise some appearance concerns but do not move roots. The choice depends on the bite and tissue health as well as appearance and estimated treatment time.
What Are Crooked Teeth?
Crooked teeth means the teeth are positioned differently from where they should be aligned. This can appear as overlapping teeth, rotated teeth, or teeth crowded together due to lack of space.
Why Do Crooked Teeth Occur?
The most common causes of crowding are:
- Genetic factors
- A narrow jaw
- Early loss of baby teeth
- Habits such as thumb-sucking
- Teeth erupting in the wrong position
How Are Crooked Teeth Corrected?
The treatment method is determined based on the degree of crowding.
1. Clear Aligner Treatment
One of the methods often preferred for mild to moderate crowding.
- A transparent, aesthetic solution
- Can be put in and taken out
- Does not affect daily life
With regular use, teeth straighten step by step.
2. Braces (Orthodontics)
Preferred for more advanced crowding.
- Moves teeth in a strong, controlled way
- Effective in more complex cases
Metal or aesthetic bracket options are available.
3. Bonding
Can be used for very mild crowding.
- Aesthetic filling material is added onto the tooth
- The appearance is corrected
- Can be completed in a single session
However, this method is suitable only for small problems.
4. Laminate Veneers
An aesthetics-focused solution.
- The front surface of the teeth is reshaped
- A more even appearance is achieved
Preferred for aesthetic corrections rather than advanced orthodontic problems.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Duration is estimated from the required movements, bite, appliance and adherence. Labels such as mild, moderate or severe do not alone provide a timetable. Refinements and retention need separate planning.
What Happens If Crooked Teeth Are Not Treated?
If left untreated, cleaning the teeth becomes harder, the risk of decay increases, gum disease can develop, and aesthetic concerns can grow.
How Is the Right Treatment Chosen?
To choose the right treatment, the condition of the teeth is evaluated, the jaw structure is analyzed, and the patient’s expectations are taken into account. The suitable method differs for each patient.
