Quick Answer

Flapless placement is an implant approach that avoids raising a larger gum flap in selected patients. A surgical opening is still made through the gum. It does not mean that tissue is untouched, and the need for sutures depends on the clinical situation.

What is assessed before treatment?

Bone volume, gum tissue and nearby anatomical structures need assessment. Clinical examination and imaging provide complementary information. A surgical guide can assist placement but cannot eliminate positional deviations or complications.

How is treatment planned?

The implant position follows the restorative plan. Guided placement may be considered where appropriate. The clinician may need an open approach if visibility or additional tissue treatment is required. Temporary and final restoration timing is a separate decision from whether a flap is raised.

Alternatives and limitations

Open-flap surgery may be appropriate where grafting or direct visibility is needed. Flapless placement is not automatically faster or safer for every patient. A smaller opening does not remove the need for the implant to integrate with bone.

Risks and follow-up

Pain, swelling, bleeding, infection, injury to adjacent tissues and implant failure remain possible. Follow the prescribed cleaning and eating advice. Unexpected pain, movement or worsening symptoms need assessment; a small opening does not remove the need for follow-up.

Questions for the consultation

Frequently Asked Questions

Is flapless placement suitable for everyone?

No. Bone and soft-tissue conditions and the need for additional surgery affect suitability.

Is the gum left completely untouched?

An opening is made through the gum. Avoiding a larger flap does not make the procedure risk-free.

Can the implant be used immediately?

Loading depends on stability and restorative planning, not on the flapless technique alone.
