Some sounds may feel different when you begin wearing aligners. Adaptation varies between people. If speech is affected by a significant fit problem, sores or persistent discomfort, contact your orthodontist instead of trimming the tray yourself.
Why Do Clear Aligners Affect Speech?
Clear aligners are thin appliances that fit over the teeth. Since they introduce a new structure inside the mouth, the tongue and lips may initially struggle to adjust.
Because of this:
- Difficulty may occur with certain letters
- A slight lisp may be noticeable
- Speaking pace may change
This is completely normal.
Which Sounds Are Most Affected?
The sounds most commonly affected are generally:
- S
- Sh
- Z
- T
These sounds require the tongue to make contact with the teeth, so they can feel different at first.
How Long Does This Last?
Adaptation varies with the person and appliance fit. Complete resolution on a particular day cannot be promised. Persistent discomfort, sores or fit problems should be discussed with the orthodontist.
What Can Be Done to Adapt Faster?
To speed up the adaptation process:
- Wear your aligners consistently
- Practise speaking out loud
- Get your tongue used to it by reading books aloud
- Don’t remove and reinsert the aligners frequently
The more you speak, the faster you’ll adapt.
Do Clear Aligners Affect Speech Less Than Braces?
Clear aligners:
- Are less noticeable
- Are generally more comfortable
They affect speech less than braces do.
Does It Cause Problems in Social Life?
No. People who wear clear aligners:
- Adapt within a short time
- Continue their daily life comfortably
- Are generally not noticed by those around them
Is It Right to Remove the Aligner to Speak?
Some people prefer to remove their aligners while speaking. However, this isn’t the right approach.
- It reduces the daily wear time of the aligners
- It extends treatment duration
For this reason, aligners should be worn while speaking too.
